Web design basics are just that... basic. Don't use effects unless they add-value to your objectives. Using elaborate effects, even using tools like Flash, often make your site harder to use and harder to get to the information your visitors are looking for. Likewise, don't implement an elaborate page structure when a simple one will do.
Basic website designing are nothing but the personal websites or the websites that are created with pre-defined templates. These websites don't have much functionality and features and not very professional too. Of course, a professional touch can be given to the site but not the technology.
Always use graphics that fit the content. Just because you have an adorable photo of your dog does not mean you should have it on your website about web design.
Make sure that the page content is arranged logically, and that all the necessary hyperlinks are where they are. Don't be afraid to repeat certain hyperlinks if it makes it easier to navigate around the page, and make sure there is always a way for your visitor to go back to the previous page, or home page. Also, try to adhere to web usability standards as much as possible!
Use standard fonts. You can get by using Serif for your headlines and Sans-Serif for your actual text. Do not wonder if your web design company advises the use of this font family. Serif fonts are actually easier to read on monitors than it is in print since screen resolution is lower in the former.
When designing a website, always keep in mind that the internet is host to a very diverse group of viewers. Some of your visitors are using a brand new state of the art computer, but others aren't. By using small file sizes and optimizing for a lower end machine, you cut out the possibility of long loading times and user frustration.
Only use safe colors and color combinations. As much as possible only use a maximum of 5 or 6 colors on a website including text. Having to many colors may cause conflict in combination and may become eye-straining. It's also better to have a solid text background so that the content is easily readable.
Coordinated Design - This one should be self evident, but it is surprising how many sites change their design for every page. You want your visitor to be comfortable in your site and one way to achieve that is by having a coordinated web design. Having a consistent logo, using a consistent color scheme, keeping your navigation in the same place. All of these help to create a coordinated design.
Although interactive web design software is available online, particularly for creating blogs, the available templates are usually quite restrictive and often lead to the creation of websites with a similar look and feel. Most web designers avoid this approach because the resulting websites tend to be very stereotyped.
A good web design company keeps in mind all the basic design elements with each and every page they design and collaborate with. This way, you and your web design company will come up with web sites that are pleasant looking, effective and attractive. As the web designer, it is important that you keep these elements in mind and apply them appropriately to your page web design.
